Electronic Health Records
ELECTRONIC HEALH RECORD INITIATIVE (EHR)
Healthcare costs account for the third largest portion of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the United States and a leading expenditure of all countries around the world. Healthcare expenditures have skyrocketed and a revamping of the system is eminent.
Over the past several years the Health and Human Services Department of the US Government, in concert with CMS, has set forth goals and objectives to utilize technology to focus healthcare on wellness and quality outcomes. Encouraging the use of interoperable computing systems, internet and electronic health records (EHR) have been major steps in this process.
Most recently e-prescribing legislation has been enacted and more legislation is in Congress requiring the use of EHR and other tools to reduce adverse events, share a single copy of patient medical records between collaborating physicians and medical institutions and document the treatment progression of patients to show quality outcomes and support “Pay for Performance”. All of these efforts together bring efficiencies, reduced costs, reduce adverse events, speed diagnosis and treatment, reduce patient anxiety, provide for speedier communication between caregivers and patients and enhance the physician’s ability to proactively monitor and deliver quality care.
